Profitability of pasture cropping in the Central West Slopes of NSW
Pasture cropping is a recent innovation being adopted by a number of farmers in the Central West of NSW. Paddocks under this system are managed to increase the density of summer active grasses that are indigenous to the area. This improves the availability of feed over summer and early autumn on soils that are unsuitable for lucerne. Winter dormancy limits the competition with the common exotic pasture species and also provides the opportunity to sow grain crops.
